Paver patios

Paver patios in the Tampa Bay area

We build backyard patios in concrete pavers, from the bare yard through to the last cut piece. The job on this page is the one we photographed the whole way through.

Finished backyard patio in multi-tone concrete pavers running from the sliding door out to the fence.

01 What the job involves

A patio is mostly the ground under it

This yard was bare dirt with a fire pit in it. Three of the six lines below happen before a paver comes off the pallet, which is where a patio is won or lost.

See the whole job
  • String lines and the dig out. The shape goes on the ground first, then the yard comes out to grade so the finished paving sits where you want it.
  • A poured strip and a block edge. Along the open side we pour a concrete strip and bed a course of block on it. That is what the field closes against, and it is why the patio stands proud of the yard instead of washing into it.
  • Base material, raked and compacted. Base goes in, gets raked out across the whole area and gets run over with a plate compactor.
  • Multi-tone concrete pavers. Mixed square and rectangular units in a modular pattern, so the colour moves across the field instead of banding.
  • Cut to close the field. The pieces against the block edge and against the house wall are cut on site as the paving runs out.
  • A walkway down the side if you want one. On this job the same paver carries from the patio along the house to the garage apron.

02 Before and after

Bare dirt, then a poured strip, then the field

This is the only job on file photographed from the first string line to the finished field. Drag the handle across the frame.

04 Questions

What people ask about a patio

All questions

What paver goes on a patio?

Standard concrete pavers in a multi-tone blend, which is what is on the ground in these frames, or large-format stone paving if you want the patio to match a stone deck. We go through the material with you on site.

Can the patio run into a walkway?

Yes. On this job the same paver carries off the patio, down the side of the house and out to the garage apron, so the two read as one surface.

Do you pave under a covered lanai?

Yes. At the limestone job we paved the covered rear patio in the same white stone as the pool deck, chalked out and cut to the posts.

The paving off the back of a house rarely stops at the patio. These are the three we get asked for with it.
